Think back to when you first decided to become a vet. I’ll guess you were always that kid who saved every spider, healed baby birds, and cared for the family pets. When asked why you wanted to be a vet, you responded, “Because I love animals!”
This enduring love for pets, and the human-animal bonds we share with them, motivated you throughout the gruelling years of veterinary school. After all, a rewarding career was waiting on the other side.
The Era of the Privately Owned Practice
You learned a lot in school, but no one could have prepared you for what it’s really like to be a professional until you experienced it first-hand. If you own your practice, you know all too well that running a full-time veterinary clinic takes all your energy, blood, sweat, and tears. The expectations can feel heavy and endless. Not only are you responsible for patients and clients, but employees as well. A monumental task indeed.
Oh, and by the way, you went to school to be a doctor. Not a business owner. Few of us received training on how to run a practice and instead learned through trial and error.
Leaving a Legacy
Most vets do an amazing job at supporting and representing the veterinary profession while running privately owned practices. Some days, I look back and can’t figure out how I kept all the balls in the air myself.
You’ve put every drop of effort into building your reputation in your community, and the idea of one day leaving your practice seems surreal. After pouring your heart and soul into your business, it’s hard to believe there is life on the other side of ownership.
But there is life after ownership! For some of us, family time and personal time have taken a back seat for so long, we can’t even remember there is a world outside of our clinic. But the earlier you start thinking about your next chapter, the more confident and in control you will feel in the legacy you leave behind.
At myVETgroup, we know this selling journey well, and it is a part of our mandate to help assure you of a continuity of your practice principles moving forward. We respect your values and the veterinary profession. We are here to talk about your options and to help you get the most value out of your practice, if and when the time comes to sell.
You want to leave a legacy that matters, and with careful planning, we can ensure you do just that.
